Filmmaker, Writer, & Speaker

Raj Amit Kumar is the founder of Dark Frames, a boutique film development and production company that focuses on developing scripts, film presentation packages and feature films.

His first feature length fiction titled Unfreedom was banned by Indian government in 2015. The film was released in North America on May 29, 2015.

Unfreedom is set in New York and Delhi and deals with issues of identity and violence. It has been shot by National Award Winner Hari Nair. Academy Award winner Resul Pookutty has done the Sound Design. The film stars BAFTA Nominee Victor Banerjee, Bhanu Uday, Bhavani Lee, Adil Hussain, Ankur Vikal, Alyy Khan, Danae Nason and Andrew Platner.

The script won first prize in the 2009 Faculty Screenwriting Competition at University Film and Video Association.


Raj Amit Kumar finished his Ph.D. coursework in Cinema and Media studies at Southern Illinois University (SIUC) in 2009. That same year, his talent, diligence and intellect earned him the National Scholarship of India for Academic Excellence and the Faculty Screenwriting Award at University of film and Video Association (UFVA). Prior to attending SIUC, Kumar graduated with in Masters of Arts in Cinema and Media Studies from City University of New York (CUNY) in 2006 where he received the George Custen Memorial Award for Academic Excellence.

Kumar is also a Speaker, teacher, and writer. He has taught cinema theory and history at both his alma maters, CUNY and SIUC. His writings and research papers have been published and presented at various conferences as well.

His next two film projects, titled Ayodhya and Shopping Mall, are currently in development stages.
